Hemoglobin A1C

Updated 2026-10-14Written for education by the Zenlo Health editorial teamHow we review
Quick answerThe A1C test shows the percentage of your hemoglobin coated with sugar, which reflects your average blood sugar over roughly 3 months. Under 5.7% is normal, 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher on two tests points to diabetes.
Fasting and prepNo fasting needed.
Typical turnaroundUsually 1 to 2 days.
Also calleda1c test, hba1c, glycated hemoglobin

What it measures

Unlike a fasting glucose, A1C does not swing with your last meal, so it works well for screening and tracking. Some conditions skew it, including anemia, sickle cell trait, recent blood loss, and pregnancy.

Who should consider it

  • Adults 35 and older, or younger with overweight and other risk factors
  • People with a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
  • Anyone with prediabetes who wants to track progress
  • People with a history of gestational diabetes or PCOS

How to read your result

A1C (%)

American Diabetes Association categories. A diagnosis needs confirmation, so see a clinician for any result in the diabetes range.

  • Prediabetes is common and often reversible with weight loss and activity.
  • An A1C of 6.5% or higher needs a clinician visit for confirmation and a plan.
  • Retest every 3 to 6 months if you are changing habits or treatment.

Reference ranges differ between labs. Use the range printed on your own report.

When to get care right away. Extreme thirst, frequent urination with weight loss, vomiting, or confusion: seek urgent care.

What to do next

If your A1C lands in the prediabetes range, a lipid panel and blood pressure check make sense too, since these risks cluster.

Questions people ask

Do I need to fast for an A1C?

No. A1C reflects months, not hours, so you can test at any time of day.

Can I order an A1C without a doctor?

Yes. Online sellers include an independent physician order. Take any result in the diabetes range to your own clinician.

How often should I get an A1C?

Every 3 years is common for adults with normal results, and yearly or more often with prediabetes. Your clinician can tailor this.
